Bioactive glass(BG)has been reported to be used for wound healing, but its mechanism still remains unclear.Wound healing is a complicated process in which endothelial cells and fibroblasts are two main cell types participated. In wound healing process, blood vessels are needed to provide oxygen and nutrients to the cells involved in it and fibroblasts are needed to secrete growth factors and extracellular matrix protein. Therefore, this article focused on the effects of BG on endothelial cells and fibroblast as well as the communication between cells in order to study the mechanism of BG promoting wound healing. In this article, the effects of BG ionic dissolution products on endothelial cells and fibroblasts were firstly investigated. Results showed that BG could stimulate the migration of cells and secretion of angiogenic growth factors such as bFGF and VEGF.In addition, the secretion of collagen ? and fibronectin in the extracellular matrix in fibroblasts were enhanced and the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts was stimulated. Then, fibroblast cell sheet activated by BG was used for wound healing. The results indicated that fibroblasts could migrate into wound bed and enhance the collagen deposition as well as angiogenesis in wound site. Moreover, the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts was also stimulated. Finally, the effects of BG on angiogenesis and cell communication in endothelial cell and fibroblast co-culture system were studied. Results proved that BG could enhance the paracrine effects and the communication between cells.
