Comparison On The Effects Of Three Methods To Remove Extrinsic Dental Stain

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficiency of ultrasonic scaling,sandblasting and OneGloss on extrinsic dental stain removal and their damage on dental surface by using digital image analysis techniques and SEM observation,through constructing the extrinsic dental stain model.METHODS: Forty-five extracted permanent teeth were collected and coated with covering agents,leaving a flat enamel surface of 3mm×3mm as the experimental area.These extracted teeth were submerged into red tea for six weeks to construct the extrinsic dental stain model.Digital photos were taken to use as baseline.Then the stained teeth were treated by ultrasonic scaling,sandblasting and Silicone OneGloss to remove the stain.Digital photos were taken under the same condition.The white chroma was measured by Adobe Photoshop CC.The data was analysed to evaluate the effects of the three methods on extrinsic dental stain removal.The dental surfaces after stain removal were observed by SEM,and were compared with the blank control,to analyse their damage on dental surfaces of the three methods.RESULTS: 1.Specimen observation:Ultrasonic scaling and sandblasting removed the stain effectively.Residual stain was presented in the the group of Silicone OneGloss.2.Digital image analysis:There was significant difference between the white chroma before stain removal and that after stain removal in all the three groups(P<0.05).There was no significant white chroma contrast difference between the ultrasonic scaling and sandblasting groups(P>0.05),while significant difference was found when compared with the Silicone OneGloss group(P<0.05).The white chroma contrast of the Silicone OneGloss group was smaller than that of the ultrasonic scaling and sandblasting groups.3.SEM obserbation:The enamel surfaces presented with many scatches in ultrasonic scaling group,While those treated by sandblasting presented with pit like microstructure.The enamel surfaces treated by Silicone OneGloss were smooth,which were very similar to the blank control.CONCLUSION:Ultrasonic scaling and sandblasting can both remove the extrinsic dental stain effectively,and their efficiency is greater than that of the OneGloss group.The damage on the dental surfaces treated by Silicone OneGloss was smaller than those treated by ultrasonic scaling and sandblasting.
