Objective To investigate the clinical and ultrasonic features of unifocal and multifocal thyroid carcinomas. Methods The clinical data of 149 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma, including 75 cases of solitary tumors and 74 cases of multiple tumors, which operated at the first time and confirmed by pathology between January 2007 and August 2016 in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Results We divided the patients into two groups, the solitary group contained 75 nodules while the multiple group contained 177 nodules. The mean age of the patients was 44 years, including 107 female and 42 male.Compared to the multiple nodules, more solitary nodules went through the whole thyroid lobes(P=0.031,P=0.010),and were larger in size(P<0.001,P<0.001,P<0.001),with unclear boundary(P=0.030),heterogeneous internal echoes(P=0.004),microcalcification(P=0.009)and nodular goiter(P<0.001).Meanwhile,the multiple group had more male patients(P=0.004)and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma than the solitary group(P=0.001,P<0.001,respectively.Conclusions The solitary group has larger nodules, and more nodules go through the whole lobes with unclear boundary, heterogeneous internal echoes, microcalcification and nodular goiter, while more multiple nodules are papillary microcarcinoma.Male are in more risk of undergoing multiple thyroid carcinoma.
