This is an important time period when rapid changes, social events, and social conflicts frequently happen and interpersonal relations and intergroup relations become increasingly intense, which have become key research issues in social psychology.Social cognition,a hotspot but difficult area in social psychology in recent years, has experienced its climax one after another, which can be attributed to the emergence of new methods, means and theories.Implicit social cognition, neural social cognition, and embodied social cognition are among the leading and influential research directions. However, researches on social cognition shall not only combine the up-to-date methods and models but also actively explore the social cognition thoughts at the background of Chinese culture.Until now,Chinese scholars have conducted some social cognition studies about Chinese people experimentally, theoretically, and culturally.Based on these studies, this study chooses the myths---one meaningful but seldom studied area---from Chinese cultural tradition as the research subject,in hope of sorting out some social cognition thoughts of Chinese people in ancient times.Chinese classic myths are the forerunner and origin of Chinese culture. As the origin of Chinese myths,Legends of Mountains and Seas has been widely studied in the 20 th century but rarely studied from the perspective of social cognition. This thesis, taking the perspective of social cognition, adopts the research model of social cognition to explore the social cognition thoughts in Legends of Mountains and Seas. The results show that self-cognition thoughts, interpersonal cognition thoughts, intergroup cognition thoughts, and cognition thoughts of social events are all manifested in Legends of Mountains and Seas, and that these thoughts of ancestors display distinction and differences to some extent.Firstly,self-cognition is acquired through human body, spatial directions, and totem;secondly, interpersonal cognition is acquired through regions, spatial directions, and clans;thirdly,in terms of intergroup cognition, social stereotype thoughts about people, beast, and deity, and gender cognition are discussed;in terms of social event cognition, both social attribution and social judgment are analyzed.Social cognition study is inseparable from theoretical research, especially the theoretical research on Chinese traditional culture. This thesis focuses on the systematic theory construction of Legends of Mountains and Seas,an attempt to explore the contemporary meaning of Chinese ancient myths and construct its role that matches that of western myths. It will not only add color to the theoretical research of social cognition and to the current research achievements of Legends of Mountains and Seas but also show a respect of and response to Chinese traditional culture. However, due to the limited time of this study,a deep understanding of Chinese traditional culture and myths has not been cultivated. The adoption of western social cognition framework into Chinese traditional culture study may raise the doubt whether the social cognition thoughts found out in this thesis are well-matched to Chinese traditional culture, which needs further discussion. In addition, various and complicated understandings and interpretations of Legends of Mountains and Seas,a book that was written in quite an early time, exist in the academic field, which means that the research results in this thesis may be incomplete and incomprehensive.
