This paper is based on a report on simulated English-Chinese consecutive interpretation of the 2011 Dartmouth Commencement Address by Conan O'Brien.Guided by Daniel Gile's Effort Model, this thesis elaborates corresponding methods and strategies through case study. The paper falls into five chapters.Chapter one, task description, introduces the background of this address, including an overview of Dartmouth College, the speaker Conan O'Brien as well as linguistic features of the source text. The second chapter is concerned about interpretation process, presenting the entire procedure from preparation to operational steps and finally the assessment in post-interpreting.The third chapter goes to great lengths to introduce three core concepts of Effort Model: “energy”,“consecutive interpreting” and “automatic operation”.It also illustrates two phases in interpreting and their interpreting equations. The fourth chapter analyzes typical examples in line with the four efforts,i.e.,listening and analyzing,note-taking,memory as well as production so as to find out the reference value of decent translation and causes of mistakes and appropriate coping techniques. The fifth chapter serves as a conclusion to summarize gains and loses over interpretation and bring forward solutions and suggestions.
