In this report,the writer translated Rewi Alley of China with some teachers and colleagues during her internship from May to July,2016.The author of this book is Geoff Chapple,a New Zealand writer.The book tells the stories of the famous international friend Rewi Alley.The source text of the translation practice is extracted from the Chapter Five to Chapter ten,which mainly narrates Rewi's life experience in Moeawatea Valley and what he sees and hears in China.The writer applied some basic translation theories to the solution of the difficulties and problems incurred in the process of translation.Meanwhile,combining with her own experience,she discussed and analyzed the translation of biographical text,found out the problems existing in the translation of biographical literature,and probed into the corresponding solutions and strategies.This translation report will discuss and analyze the problems and difficulties in the translation of the selected six chapters(from 5 to 10)Rewi Alley of China.The source text belongs to biographical literature,which is of characteristic of accuracy,literariness and historicity.In translation process,in order to achieve authenticity,accuracy and literariness which biography literature required,the translator adopted Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as guidance,and applied such translation methods as literal translation,free translation,translation in original order,translation in reverse order and transliteration,and such translation techniques as amplification,omission,splitting,combination and transformation,etc.This report consists of five parts: task background,task description,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.The first part mainly introduces the background,nature and features of the translation task.The second part analyzes the characteristics of source text and states the requirements from the entrusting party.The third part illustrates the preparations for background information,the glossary of terms,the translation tools and translation theories strategies and other matters on translation before translating,quality control and details of the translation while translating as well as evaluations from people who are involved in this task after translating.The fourth part lists the problems and difficulties encountered in translation,including the translation of culture-specific terms,new words and long and difficult sentences.Relevant translation methods and techniques are applied to analyze the relevant cases in this part.In the last part,shortcomings in the translation and experience learned from this task are stated as well.
