With the development of the breadth and depth of human communication between countries, the cultural exchange between China and the West is becoming more and more frequent, which enforces more translators apply themselves to the relative research on the text translation.Literary works,as an important carrier of national cultural spirit, naturally become the one of focuses of translation studies. And among them, biographical works bear the historical and cultural background and have unique creative requirements, which is an important part of the study. This practice report takes the excerpts from Rewi Alley of China as the translation text, and uses Chesterman's “translation norm” theory to guide the translation. This theory comprehensively describes two principles of translation, and gives the values that restrict translation norm,in order to help translators achieve the best translation.Based on these two principles, this paper analyzes the original text from lexical level and syntactic level, summarizes the difficulties in translation such as the long sentences, orientation nouns and pronouns, and puts forward corresponding translation strategies like literal translation, free translation, division and pre-position,etc.This report is divided into five chapters: the first is the introduction, which emphasizes the research background, analyzes the biographical texts and points out the significance of biographical texts translation. The second chapter is the task description process. The author analyzes the text and expounds the requirements of the client. The third chapter is the process of translation, which includes three parts: pre-translation,mid-translation and post translation. In the pre-translation,the author prepared the background knowledge and prepared the translation tools and resources;Furthermore, the author selected a parallel text named Rewi Alley of China written by Zhu jian;In terms of translation theory, the author selected the theory of translation norm and a translation plan was also made, which is presented in the form of tables.Last but not least, the glossary is presented. In the middle part, the quality control is elaborated, and the translator describes the translation process, including the first draft, revision and final version. In the post translation part,self-evaluation,peer evaluation and client evaluation are carried out.The fourth chapter is case analysis,in which the authorused translation norm and corresponding translation strategies to analyze the key and difficult points of translation. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. The author made a summary and expounded the inspiration and prospect for the future study.During this process, the author realized that the urgent need for improvement lies in two aspects: Both theory and practice. In terms of theory, the author has made a preliminary study of various translation theories in the course, but lacks in-depth research;in terms of practice, although the translator has completed the translation requirements, there still exists certain distance to master translation skills.Through this translation practice, the translator has realized that a wide range of knowledge is essential to a good translation. The author summarizes the translation experience and shortcomings, hoping to enlighten other translators in the translation of similar texts.
