William Faulkner,a Nobel Prize winner, has been considered as one of the greatest American novelists. In addition,he has a great deal of influence over the development of the Literature of American South.Writing about his land and about man in eternal struggles,Faulkner conveys nostalgia and a sense of impending doom to the readers. The Sound and the Fury, his fourth completed novel, depicts the living dilemma of Compson's family facing the tension and pressure between the Southern past and the modern world. The spirit deterioration in the Compson's family which characterizes modern life stems directly from the loss of love and lack of emotional response. It becomes clear that what Faulkner pours his love and concern into is not merely the American South but the human situation in general. Therefore, after studying The Sound and the Fury, the readers can not only fully appreciate the writer's superb artistry, but also get an insight into the living perplexity of modern people in such a world whose traditional values have disintegrated. The emotional intensity and unique writing techniques in The Sound and the Fury have caused the readers' and critics, concern over the recent years. They try to interpret the text via various methods. The focus of study extends from the theme related to the South and art of stream of consciousness to race, ecology, feminism, postcolonial criticism.Nevertheless, this paper will explore the characters'frustrations and the roots leading to their living perplexity from the perspective of polyphonic narration.Since the polyphonic narration focuses on the protagonists and their state of mind, which provides a comparatively new angle for modern people to get inspirations and spiritual way out. This comparatively new way promotes the study of the novel and Faulkner both in width and depth. The thesis will analyze first three parts of the novel with more details of the characters' dialogues and their traits. The characters' scrambled dialogues and stream of consciousness are not meaningless fragments, but integral and targeted to construct their subjectivity.
