Research On The Application Of Polyphonic Narration In Suspense Films

Suspense refers to a genre that arouses the audience’s strong curiosity and desire for discovery through elaborate suspense,interlocking storylines,unpredictable events and the protagonist’s confusing fate.The polyphonic narrative comes from the field of literature,which advocates that literary works should be free from the uniform authorial thinking and give equal opportunities for many characters to voice their opinions,emphasizing the equal exchange and dialogue among multiple independent ideologies.In the modern and post-modern multicultural context,the field of video art also refers the polyphony theory,using the unique media language of film,such as scene design and montage,to express polyphony in the new era of video creation,and the creation of suspense has gradually shown more obvious polyphony characteristics.This paper selects Confessions,Coherence and Deep in the Heart,three excellent domestic and foreign suspense films,as the focus of study.Based on the research on film polyphony,this paper analyzes the multiple temporal and spatial structures,multiple perspective shifts and multiple thematic expressions of suspense films from the three major features of polyphony,multi-voice,independence and dialogue,combined with the unique audio-visual expressions of images.In the process of applying polyphonic narrative in suspense films,the time reversal and juxtaposition of repetitive space with the multi-voice is conducive to the creation of strong suspense;the multiple perspective shift between limited knowledge and omniscience with the independence is conducive to the creation of suspense atmosphere;the multiple communication between large structural dialogues and miniature character dialogues with the dialogue is conducive to the suspense film to carry a richer theme expression with practical significance and human nature regression.Therefore,polyphonic narrative has a high application value in the creation of suspense films.
