This dissertation is about the interaction between Japan's southward expansion(Southern Advance/Nanshin)and Southeast Asian nationalist movements from 1940 to 1945.By indicating the evolution of the relations between the Japan's invasion and nationalist movements,to inter:pret the reason and influence of this evolution.The dissertation firstly reviews the development venation of two objects respectively and discusses the early interaction between from Meijiperiod to 1930s;secondly it expounds the impact of two different ideo lo gies:" Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere"(Daitoa kyoeiken)and Atlantic Charter to the nationalists in the early days of the Second World War;thirdly it illustrates three different types of interaction with French Indochina,Burma and Dutch Indies during the Pacific War;lastly it analyzes the merits and demerits as a whole of Japan's invasion and occupation policies.In the end,this paper shows Japan's intentional or unintentional activities indeed promote the development of the natioalist movements,although its military force has retreated,and shape the political/military leadership and political path of Southeast Asia after Second World War.
