An Analysis On An English To Chinese Book Launch Consecutive Interpreting Based On The Effort Model

With the continuous opening up of China and the deepening of globalization,economic,political and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries are gaining momentum.People from different cultural backgrounds need to be assisted by interpreters when communicating with each other.Therefore,to play a good role of bridge between two languages or cultures is interpreters' prime mission.Through the author's own interpreting practices,she has realized that information listening and producing are vital to interpretation.If interpreters cannot listen to the source information clearly,they can never accomplish the interpreting task.After information is received,interpreters should consider about how to process it and what coping tactics should be used in order to produce better interpreting result,In this sense,interpreters are required to have a wide knowledge background and perfect linguistic skills.It is even more critical that interpreters are flexible enough using appropriate coping tactics according to various occasions.This thesis will use a transcript of English to Chinese consecutive interpreting as a sample.Combined with Professor Gile's Effort Model,the report will systematically analyze information listening and producing with examples from the transcript.The text is transcribed from a book launch where the author was responsible for the interpretation.The total length of the book launch is about two and a half hour.In the dissertation,the author will pick the most representative examples to do the analysis.First,this paper will introduce the whole interpreting task,including the type and theme of the book launch,the on-spot atmosphere,the style of the speech,and the author's own preparation for this book launch.Next,the author will explain the theory framework of the thesis,and will be focusing on the Listening Phase and the Production Phase.Moreover,by providing examples in the transcript,the author will figure out problems in the Listening Phase,and provide better interpretations by using background knowledge,grammar and syntax knowledge,and number skills.Finally,in the Production Phase,the author will summarize aspects to be improved in this interpretation,including too much pause fillers,inappropriate collocations,information loss,and misinterpretation.Then she will offer better versions of interpretation to the examples.The author's intention is that those strategies and coping tactics will give other interpreters some enlightenment.
