Interpose Into Society With Creation:a Study On The Publicness In Pu Songling's Transition Of Creation

Public Sphere refers to a political concept originating from the western world that carries undeniable similarity and catholicity with Chinese traditional society despite of all the differences.Although no public space that represents strict equivalence of Western Public Sphere has been arisen in Chinese ancient society,a limited public sphere that met the minimum requirement,i.e.a quasi-public-sphere,did substantially serve as the physical form of public sphere with Chinese characteristics.The identity transformation from traditional scholar to rural literati of Pu Songling,an intellectual under profound influences from traditional Confucian ethics,was permeated with public spirit,which shared common ground with the publicness of western public sphere.We are about to discuss Pu's transition of creation from the perspective of his public spirit.The five parts of this dissertation begin with the illustration of Pu's historical background(society&family),cultural identity,class attribute and relation with people.The second part takes the viewpoint of publicness to interpret and explore Liao Zhai Zhi Yi,Pu's magnum opus in classical Chinese.The third part probes into the causes and significances of Pu Songling's transition of creation by dissecting Liao Zhai Li Qu(Liao Zhai Folk Tune),which marks Pu Songling's transition of creation style,and comparing the certain pieces adapted from Liao Zhai Zhi Yi with their antecedents to thoroughly identify the differences and similarities.The fourth part performs a concrete comparison between Liao Zhai Zhi Yi and Liao Zhai Li Qu based on the aspects of cultural perspective,political level,language application,subject selection and figure emphasis.In the last,the fifth part once again explains the public spirit contained in Pu's works by commenting on Liao Zhai Za Zhu,a pragmatic literature collection formulated during the writer's later life.The development course from Liao Zhai Zhi Yi that expressed personal cynicism in classical Chinese to Liao Zhai Li Qu that underlined public consciousness to Liao Zhai Za Zhu that shouldered the obligation to serve the people suggests that Pu Songling interposed into social life through literature creation as well as constantly tailored the creative orientation and pattern to contemporary reality to benefit and save the world.
