The research aims to study the application of the content schema theory which proves the feasibility and validity of English reading teaching in Junior High School.Since 1987,the content schema theory emphasizes that students could understand the passage successfully by activating their existing background knowledge.Primarily,the paper reviews the development of the content schema theory a t home and abroad.Beside,the Lin Yejv No.1 Middle School in Dong Jingchen g Town was selected.It was a forestry school.And these students mainly come from various forest farms.It is very difficult for them to gain more knowledge i n rural areas,so they lack background knowledge.Therefore,the subjects are fro m two classes from the school.The experiment is implemented by questionnaire,pre-test and post-test.The experiment tries to answer the following questions:1)What is the current situation of the students' English reading in junior school?2)Does the application of content schema theory reading teaching have an effect on the students' English reading achievements? What ways does it have effect on ?Before the experiment,the pre-test proves that the students' English reading level is similar in experimental group and control group and these two groups are divided randomly.Then the pre-questionnaire researches the current situation of 34 students' English reading in the experimental group.After that,the teacher adopts the content schema-oriented method in the experimental group,while the teacher adopts traditional teaching method in the control group of the whole process.The research adopts percentage and SPSS statistics to analyze the data of questionnaires and tests,in which independence-sample t-test and paired-sample t-test are used.The study indicates that the students' reading achievements and interest is improved overtly.Otherwise,their reading habits improved a lot.Therefore,the conclusion shows that using content schema theory in reading teaching could help students improve their reading performance effectively.
