| This paper is a practice report on the English-Chinese translation of the Corporation Environmental,Health&Safety Management System Manual.In the process of translation,the author finds that the Manual contains a large number of modal verbs,which are often used to stipulate the rights and obligations of both parties.Therefore,the author believes that the most important task in translating such business texts is to handle the translation of modal verbs.Since the functional types of modal verbs in this translation practice report are expressed in different degrees,the author divides the modal verbs into three categories:cognitive modal verbs,moral modal verbs,and dynamic modal verbs,based on the semantic theory and the author analyzes the different types of modal verbs in combination with examples in translation tasks,under the guidance of Newmark's communicative theory. |
