A Study On Semantic Transparency Of Chinese Parallel Double-syllable Compound Words

Semantic transparency means that semantics of compound words which can be inferred from the semantic meaning of the morphemes of the compound words,which is widely used in psychology,language teaching and so on in the European psychology field.In this paper,we use two-syllable parallel compound words as the research object,through quantitative experiments and qualitative analysis,to construct an objective formula of semantic transparency and to evaluate and classify the transparency of the parallel compound words,to evaluate and verify the transparent word and the opaque word through the repetition priming experiment.At the same time,the paper discusses the lexical processing methods of the compound words with different transparency,probes into the criteria and influencing factors of the semantic transparency of these compounds,and finally attempts to explore the application of the research of the semantic transparency in Chinese as a second language teaching and other aspects.The article is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction.Introducing and summarizing the definition,measurement classification,impact factors and application of semantic transparency on the previous research.After the theory of semantic transparency was introduced in China,except for a small amount of research on the transparency of idioms or chunks,the research on the semantic transparency of compound words is mostly,and researchers explore the connotation of semantic transparency from cognitive psychology or lexical ontology.However,this kind of research is more fragmented,does not form the system.On the one hand,the influence factors of the semantic transparency and the computation research is not much.On the other hand,the transparency analysis of the specific types of compound words is not comprehensive.In the second chapter,the semantic transparency formula is constructed to measure and evaluate the transparency of parallel compound words.Firstly,the connotation of the parallel compound words is defined,the selection principle and the selection range are determined,and 1872 compounds are chosen as the research object in the modern Chinese frequency dictionary.Then use the theory "Semantic difference is the semantic distance" as the theoretical basis and the thesaurus named HIT IR-Lab Tongyici Cilin as the base database,this paper constructs the transparency calculation formula.And then divides the level of transparency into six levels,which are completely transparent,relatively transparent,general transparent,general opaque,relatively opaque,and completely opaque,and counts the distribution of the grade quantity.In the third chapter,we use the repetitive priming experiment to select and verify the results of the last chapter,and discuss the processing way of transparents and opaques,then to make a theoretical analysis on the criteria of the transparency judgment.This chapter uses DMDX software to design a repetitive priming experiment,which is validated by selecting completely transparent and completely opaque words as extreme samples from the transparency evaluation results.It is concluded that the transparency has a great influence on the length of the reaction time and the starting amount of morphemes.And it is inferred that the transparent words use both whole word and morpheme as the access token unit while the vague words tend to the whole word storage processing.So it is very important to determine the transparency of morpheme activation.Then it analyzes the criterion of "high frequency/common sense" and"close/estranged" between morpheme and whole word meaning.Finally the paper discusses the lexicalization processing and the transparency reducing of the parallel compound words.In fourth chapter,based on the research results,this paper puts forward some exploration of the application of semantic transparency in Chinese vocabulary teaching,and suggestions on the application of Chinese text difficulty test.
