A Grammatical Study Of The Dummy Verb And The Nominal Verb In Chinese

As a special closed-class member of the verb in Modern Chinese Language,the Dummy Verb is active in many grammatical phenomena.Although its number is finite,the Dummy Verb is frequently used in formal written language.The Nominal Verb is a special word put forward by Zhu Dexi during his discuss about the object of the Preparative Predicate Object Verb.The Nominal Verb itself is a verb with the nature of noun which belongs to the hot field of the Multi-Category Word in Modern Chinese Language.This thesis is consist of four parts.In the first part,this thesis revolved with the the origin and establishment of the definition of the Dummy Verb.This thesis compared the characteristic and limitation of the Dummy Verb with other concept.Based on the comparison and the grammatical feature,this thesis tried to get the formal definition.Combined with the views of previous study,the thesis pioneer to establish a whole set of formal distinguishing standards of the Dummy Verb.In the second part,this thesis aimed to confirm the range of the Dummy Verb.In order to make it,the thesis first collected all the “potential verb” from all previous literature.Second,referring to the Modern Chinese Dictionary,the Eight Hundred Words in Chinese and Chinese Verb Usage Dictionary,this thesis selected all the senses of a dictionary entry from them that suits the feature of grammaticalization of the Dummy verb.Third,this thesis search the objects of those “potential verbs” from the Center for Chinese Linguistics and classified those objects then conducted statistics.Finally,this thesis combined those steps to test all the verbs one by one in order to make certain the range of the Dummy verb.In the third part,this thesis centered on the comparison of the Dummy verb and the common verb.Then it classified and compared those members inside the Dummy verb and studied their grammatical function.In the forth part,this thesis studied the differences between the Nominal Verbwith the historic concept “the Nominalization” and the “V-ing” verbs in English.It also discussed the part of speech of the Nominal verb.Besides,it mainly discussed the insufficient of “the 8 Identification Standards” of Zhu Dexi.In the last part,based on the certain members of the Dummy verb from the preceding text,this thesis started from the semantic feature and the grammatical feature to search the verbal objects of the Dummy verb in order to get the correct distinguishing standards of the nominal verb.
