Words are the basic building blocks of language.The more words you know and understand,the more you are able to express your ideas and thoughts.The effectively promote vocabulary growth,teachers not only must aim to help students learn specific words----that is,knowledge a dispositions that will transfer to and enhance students' learning of other words as well.One part of generative vocabulary knowledge is word-learning strategies.In addition to considering the situation in which the course occurs,it is necessary to decide what vocabulary will be selected for teaching,how it will be sequenced,and how it will be presented.Meanwhile,the class time is so limited that you can not teach every word that you want to introduce to your students.That's the reason we need to teach learning strategies for students' further study.In view of this,this study tries to employ association-based model of vocabulary teaching,and it mainly answers the following two research questions:Question 1: Can the association-based model of vocabulary teaching and learning motivate students' interest in studying vocabulary?Question 2: Can the association-based model of vocabulary teaching and learning improve students' ability of using vocabulary?Based on the association strategies,a 14-week experiment was conducted to answer the two research questions.One hundred participants from No.2 Senior High School of Jinzhou were involved in the experiment,in which association-based model of vocabulary teaching was carried out in the Experiment Class(EC),whereas the Control Class(CC)was still taught by the traditional model.At the same time,some tests,questionnaires,and an interview were used to collect experiment data,which were analyzed by SPSS.The results showed that the students in the EC did better in vocabulary post-test and manifested stronger vocabulary learning motivation than those in the CC,which proved that the association-based model in the study was more effective than the traditional approach.A conclusion is thus made that association-based model of vocabulary teaching and learning is feasible and effective,and association-based model can not only enable students to learn words effectively,but improve their motivation of vocabulary learning.
