Application Of Translation Shift Theory Into English-Chinese Literary Translation

Translation Shift is a common phenomenon in the translation process.The translation shift between certain languages is necessary to guarantee a fluent communication,as it is the premise of conveying information and effective communication.In respect of how to implement the shift,scholars in countries put forwarded different ideas.The concept of "translation shift" is defined by J.C.Catford as departures from formal correspondence in the process of translating the source language to target language.Because of clear classifications and strong practicability,Catford's translation shift theory is the most influential one among all studies of translation shift.English literature work actually is a "virtual world" built by authentic English.It perfectly entails integral,coherent and idiomatic English expressions,and suggests culture in English-speaking countries in various aspects.Therefore,translating English novels can provide an important access for readers who are interested in cross-cultural communication which improves the mutual understanding among countries,and promote the globalization development.However,due to the huge differences lie in two languages,especially in grammar aspect,the E-C translation of English literature works is never an easy case.Based on the linguistic characteristic analysis of English literature work Modern Baptist,this thesis will examine the adaptability of Translation Shift in English literature work translation.Concrete examples will also be provided.Through practice and analysis,this thesis finds Translation Shift theory can guide the translation of original English novels.It is desired that this thesis can provide some references to studies on Translation Shift and attempted practices on E-C translation shift in English literatures.What's more,it is also hoped that this thesis will raise the attention paid on original English novels.
