The new curriculum emphasizes that the design of the course should focus on the students' interests,life experience and cognitive level,advocating the learning way of experience,practice,participation,cooperation and communication and making the process of language learning to be the process of students' positive emotional experience and autonomous learning.The important advantages of small group discussion are: caring most about students' self development and building a democratic and open class,which will enable students to take part in learning activities positively.The New English Curriculum Standards High Schools points out that the senior high school English teaching should take advantage of information technology and modern teaching methods.At the same time,it should be realized that the employment of information technology can not replace the traditional classroom teaching model.Therefore,the application of the Small Group Discussion(SGD)Teaching Method,which combines the advantages of the online learning and traditional classroom learning,is worth considering.The teacher can teach English,carry out activities and communicate with their students online.What's more,the students are able to use the online platform to study by themselves and share their ideas with each other.Therefore,small group discussion is an inevitable product for high school English class.However,today in senior high school,because of too much teaching content in one class,the lecture method dominates in classroom teaching,resulting in many bad effects.For one thing,not all students actively take part in English learning,which is not easy to improve their learning enthusiasm.For another,students are in a passive state.As a result,the efficiency of students' learning and their English study are not easy to be improved.Therefore,in this paper,the author primarily discusses the small group discussion teaching method which is applied to senior high school English class in order to solve the following questions:(1)How is the small group discussion teaching method applied to the senior highschool English class?(2)What effect is the small group discussion teaching method supposed to have on students?Firstly,the related theories of small group discussion teaching method are analyzed,including its concept,its theoretical basis,its researches at home and abroad and its practical significance of applying it to senior high school English class.Secondly,one hundred and twelves students are selected from Tianshui No 1 Middle School as the object of the questionnaire survey and interview.Lastly,the paper systematically carries out the research of small group discussion teaching method in English class and analyzes the data from the research results to test whether students have been affected by using small group discussion teaching method.From the research,the conclusion is drawn that students' English learning interest and attitude,and English expression ability can be improved efficiently by using small group discussion teaching method.
