In the Tianqi years of Ming dynasty,Kuang Yi,which translated by the French missionary Nicolas Trigault and Chinese christian Zhang Geng,is the first individual Chinese version of Aesop's fables.Before this,Italian missionary Matteo Ricci and Spanish missionary Diego de Pantoja had translated several fables from Aesop's fables respectively in their books Ten Works of Grotesque and Seven Ways to Conquer.In late Qing period,Yi Shi Yu Yan,which translated by Mun Mooy seen-shang and Sloth,was printed at The Canton Press.Aesop's fables in Beijing Dialect was translated by Zhongtian Jingyi from a popular Japanese version.These two versions were translated mainly as language materials for Europeans,Americans and Japanese in China to learn Chinese.Meanwhile,there were also several fables from Aesop's fables translated into Chinese published in newspapers,which aimed at introduce western fables to Chinese.Zhang Tao collected and transcribed these fables to be Hai Guo Miao Yu.At the end of the Qing dynasty,Lin Shu and Yan bothers translated into Aesop's fables of The Famous Greek,which adapted the morals to satirize current affairs and alert the people.In the early Republican era,Sun Yuxiu translated and edited Romance of Aesop's fables,which telling a story in a more interesting and informal way of historical novel.By this means,it become a quite distinctive one among other subsequent versions,which strive to restore the original version.Thus the degree of Chinese cultural characteristic in these versions have become increasingly diluted.Through carrying out the eight versions above,this text are aimed at analyze differential performances of Chinese cultural characteristic in different historical periods of them.Kuang Yi chime in with Chinese social systems and values,Yi Shi Yu Yan and Aesop's fables in Beijing Dialect use Chinese dialects and add Chinese backgrounds,Aesop's fables of The Famous Greek adapt the morals according to current affairs,Romance of Aesop's fables change genre of the text and way of telling stories in a Chinese cultural way.Through the above-mentioned approaches,we can get some illumination for the external translation of Chinese literature.
