With the increase of China's comprehensive national power and the appeal of Chinese literature “going-out”,the translation of Chinese literature has become an academic focus.Huo Zhe,as one of the most powerful works of Yu Hua who is a famous Chinese writer, has been translated into many foreign languages and widely accepted by foreign readers. In recent years, the academic field pays much attention to its translation. Some scholars have studied the English version of Huo Zhe from perspectives such as ideology,eco-translatology,translation ethics, adaptation theory, norm theory, hybridity and so on.However, few scholars take notice of the role that Michael Berry as the subject plays in the translation and the level of researches on his translation should be further advanced. This thesis tries to analyze the English version of Huo Zhe in the light of George Steiner's hermeneutic fourfold translation motion, namely “trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation” and “compensation”,in order to study Michael Berry's translation action and summarize how to strike a balance between the source text and the target text, the source culture and the target culture. This thesis enriches the research perspectives of studying Michael Berry's translation of Huo Zhe and profoundly analyze his translation action, which is helpful to explore strategies for promoting Chinese literature works to go to the world by a way that is more acceptable to the western audiences while retains Chinese culture elements,so as to push forward researches on strategies or methods of Chinese literature “going-out”.
