The translation material is selected from the Chapter Three of the Citizen of the World: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau.The book is written by John Richard English who is a Canadian scholar and politician.It introduces the life experiences of Pierre Elliott Trudeau from his birth to 1968 when he defeated senior Liberal Member of Parliament and was elected as the Prime Minister of Canada,covering his family background,studying,life,political stand and so on.This is an important period for him and the experience has a significant influence on his 16-year presidency.The book received the Charles Taylor Prize for literary non-fiction in February 2007 and was rated as the bestselling biography by The Globe and Mail.As a biographical literature,the translation material is featured by historicity and literariness.In order to express the historicity and literariness of the source text,show Pierre Elliott Trudeau's image and character,and realize the aim of cultural communication,the author takes Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance,explores the translation strategy and translation technique from the aspects of skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,and points out the practical value of Skopos Theory in biographical literary translation.In terms of difficulties in idiomatic English expressions of some words and sentences and involved background information of the book,the writer uses different translation strategies and techniques basing on the guidance of three rules of Skopos Theory,such as amplification,conversion,sentence restructuring,annotation and so on,to deal with these problems in the hope of exactly reproducing the source text.In the part of cases analysis,the author explains these strategies and techniques in detail and expects that they could help other translators to do the biographical translation for the future.The report is composed of four chapters in all.In the first chapter,the author makes a brief introduction to this translation project.The second chapter describes the whole translation process,including the preparation before this task,the process and the revise after this task.The third chapter is the focal point of this report.The author chooses some cases,analyzes the problems encountered during the process of translation,and then puts forward the corresponding methods on the basis of the three rules of Skopos Theory.In the last chapter,the author concludes the experience and deficiency of this practice and talks about the lesson of translators' attainment.
