The translation project of this paper, the literary translation of biography,is selected from Hans Christian Andersen, which mainly introduces the life and representative works of Hans Christian Andersen.Translating biographical literature not only needs to accurately convey the original information, but also needs to deliver its literary style and artistic colors.Adaptation Theory proposed by Verschueren provides new ideas for solving the problems of taking both documentary features and literary features into account in the translation of biographical literature. This paper first gives an overview of the current studies on the translation of biographical literature and the relevant contents of Adaptation Theory. Then, starting from the three aspects of Adaptation Theory,Contextual Correlates of Adaptability,Structural Objects of Adaptability and Dynamics of Adaptability, this paper proposes the methods to solve the translation difficulties through the specific examples which were found through the practice of translating Hans Christian Andersen.Through research, this paper finds that when dealing with linguistic context, the translator should try his best to make sure that there is no ambiguity in the translation by adding referential objects, clarifying logical relations and determining the concrete space and time.At the same time, the translator can make the target text establish the same communicative context as the source text by means of adding determiners and modal particles. In the aspect of Structural Objects of Adaptability, the translator should pay attention to the structural differences between English and Chinese, and try to use four-character cases and short sentences in the process of English-Chinese translation,so as to meet the aesthetic taste of Chinese readers. The whole process of translating needs Dynamics of Adaptability. When facing the words and sentences with strong cultural connotation, the translator can combine multiple ways of complementary translation with splitting long sentences and adjusting language sequence to integrate the background knowledge of religion and literature that involved in the original text,so as to reduce the reading barriers of target readers. All in all, this paper concludes that Adaptation Theory has great significance for guiding the translation of biographical literature. The translator should choose the translation methods according to different adaptability,so that the translation can not only accurately convey the information and cultural connotation of the original text, but also conform to the understanding level and aesthetic taste of the target language readers,so as to realize the communicative intention of the biographical literature translation.
