Si Shu Zhang Ju Ji Zhu(????????),(hereinafter referred to as Ji Zhu)is one of the important works of Zhu Xi,in which the use of Sound Explanation(??)to explain the meaning of new words and LI or Chinese philosophy of Confucianism(??),has high value for research.Sound Explanation in this paper mainly refers to the use of words that are homonymous and synonymous with those to be explained, and its role is mainly to explain the meaning of those words, reveal their linguistic sources(??),and find intelligible alternatives(??).However, the Sound Explanation also has another unique function, namely, the interpretation of LI or Chinese philosophy of Confucianism.149 examples of Sound Explanation were identified in this paper,in which 69 of them were analyzed in detail.Major Sound Explanation terms were then summarized, such as MOU,MOU YE,(?,??)MOU ZHE,MOU YE'(??,??)and ZHI YAN,ZHI WEI YAN(??????).Then it discusses the relationship between the phonology, morphology, and semantic meaning between related word groups. It concludes that the to-be-explained words(???)and employed words(???)are same in pronunciation, initials(??),or finals phonologically(??);There were symbols of homonym or synonym between the two groups; The phonetic symbol may be from the to-be-explained words to the employed ones,or vice versa; There were also cases when the two groups were of no relation. While from the perspective of semantic relations, there were also some findings, including the similarity of results, properties and process between the thing and the compared subjects. The feature of Sound Explanation in The Ji Zhu was summarized as Learning from previous practices and using Sound Explanation to interpret the philosophy of Confucianism.
