Impact Of Time Pressure On The Asymmetrical Representations Of Semantic Relations

Language is a symbol system.There is a link between the words in a complex system,semantic relations between words has been the focus of linguists and psychologists.Among the many semantic relations,causal relation,hierarchical relation,unidirectional associative relation increasing attention by researchers.Previous studies have generally agreed that there is an asymmetrical representations on the causal relation,hierarchical relation and unidirectional associative relation.However,what causes the asymmetrical representations of semantic relations? Researchers have proposed that maybe contact with the existence of predictive and predictive process on semantic relations,but there is no consistent conclusion.On the basis of previous studies,this study attempts to add time pressure to the semantic relations judgment task in order to explore the impact of the predictive and postdictive on the asymmetrical representations of semantic relations.This study will be added predictive pressure and the postdictive pressure to the semantic relations judgment tasks,each pressure are set at two levels: with pressure(presentation time of 150ms),without pressure(presentation time 1000ms).Each experimental set four kinds of conditions: with the predictive pressure and postdictive pressure(150ms-150ms),only the predictive pressure(150ms-1000ms),only the postdictive pressure(1000ms-150ms),no time pressure(1000ms-1000ms).To explore the impact of time pressure on causal relation(first experiment),hierarchical relation(second experiment)and unidirectional associative relation(third experiment)asymmetry.Results: Firstly,the time pressure has impact on the asymmetrical representations of causal relation.The single predictive pressure or postdictive pressure has a little of impact on the asymmetrical representations of causal relation,when the predictive pressure or postdictive pressure coexist led to the asymmetrical representations disappear.Secondly,the time pressure has no impact on the asymmetrical representations of hierarchical relation.The asymmetry representations of the hierarchyrelation more influenced by other factors such as space position.Thirdly,the time pressure has impact on the asymmetrical representations of unidirectional associative relation.The asymmetry representations of the unidirectional associative relation is mainly manifested in two directions of connection strength,predictive pressure and postdictive pressure have an effect on its.
