The Cost Of Beauty:Perception Of Makeup In Female Faces And The Male Mating Strategy

Since ancient times,external attractiveness has been an important factor affecting the mate choice of males and females.Numerous studies found that compared with females,males pay more attention to the external attractiveness of females.In order to attract high quality males,females will adopt the way of improving attractiveness,such as makeup and improving their dressing styles,to enhance self-mating competitiveness.From the evolutionary perspective,the external attractiveness of females reflects their potential reproductive value or fertility.In mate choice,males prefer highly attractive females and combination with them will have more reproductive advantages.In the current study,we will explore the ability of male perception of makeup cues in female face and the influence of perception on their mate strategy from the evolutionary perspective.In the Study 1,the results show that on the unlimited time condition,the males who were without professional makeup training had the ability to perceive make-up cues in female face.In the Study 2,the results show that on the 50ms condition,the males perception of makeup cues in female face were mediated by sociosexuality:compared to preference short-term mating strategy males,preference long-term mating strategy males were sensitive to makeup cues in female face.On the 6500ms condition,all males perceived the makeup cues in female face and weren' t mediated by sociosexuality.However,the perception of make-up cues in female face weren' t influence mate choice.In the Study 3,on the 50ms condition,the male perception of make-up cues in female face were mediated by sociosexuality,preference long-term mating strategy males were sensitive to makeup cues in female face than preference short-term mating strategy males.On the 6500ms condition,all male perceived the makeup cues in female face and weren' t mediated by sociosexuality.In addition,the male will base on the makeup cues in female face to assess the reproductive value as long-term or short-term mate.That is the male perception of makeup cues in female faces influence the male who preference long-term strategy assess to the mate value of potential mate and decrease suitable assessmemt toward individuals who were makeup as long-term mate.In this study,we manipulated three studies to demonstrate that males have ability to perception of makeup cues in female face,this ability to perception of facial makeup cues were mediated by sociosexuality.And males who perceived makeup cues in female face have different influences to male who preference different mating strategies.Females who use makeup to conceal their reproductive value influence male who preference long-term mating strategy.But for short-term mating strategy males,their mating strategy haven' t significant variation.
