With the improvement of living quality and more health consciousness,growing numbers of people begin to take interest in the latest resources and scientific methods for guiding their daily exercise.As an essential means in promoting cultural exchanges,translation industry tends to focus on topics such as business,literature,law and science rather than sports textbooks and technological manuals.Therefore,the translator chooses the ninth chapter of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription,a widely used sports textbook for master courses,as the source text in writing this report.Vivian H.Heyward and Ann L.Gibson,co-authors of the book,adopt simple terms to explain profound theories with regard to the ninth chapter“Designing Weight Management and Body Composition Programs,” unifying the specialty and popularity and endowing the whole text with more conciseness,preciseness and logicality.The report is written under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,namely “translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message,first in terms of meaning and secondly of style.” Since the original text is an informative one and meaning shall take priority over style based on Functional Equivalence Theory,the translator has laid more emphasis on the target text,especially in terms of meaning delivery,so as to improve the translation from lexical level,syntactical level and textual level.At the lexical level,the translator selects technical terms and Initialisms to summarize the expressive habit in sports texts.At the syntactical level,combination,division,simplification and amplification are adopted for realizing the maximum equivalence.At the textual level,cohesion and coherence can be achieved by logic adjustment and meaning unification between lines.
