This is a translation project for the first chapter of The Pearl Oyster written by Australian scholars:Paul Southgate and John Lucas. The selected chapter focuses on the introduction to the pearl industry's historical development and the main pearl belt around the world. The text introduces not only the relevant technology of pearl production, but also the pearl history, economy, religion, culture, geography and other extensive background knowledge. This translation project involves many proper and technical nouns about pearl, and those nouns pose challenges and difficulties to the translation practice.Guided under Skopos theory, this report points out that the translation should focus on the convey of source information, the readers' expectation and the coherence of language and logic. Then it analyzes the difficult vocabulary and sentences with examples and classifies the proper and technical nouns into different categories according to their purposes and functions.According to the intratextual coherence and intertextual coherence between the source text and the target text, different strategies have been used in the translation, including transference, substitution, equivalence, annotation, adoption of the established popular translated names, conversion, free translation, synthesis. The report also summarizes the experience, lessons and unresolved issues in this translation project.
