Simultaneous interpreting(SI)has been widely used in international conferences, and studied by many researchers using approaches in various disciplines.Over the years, there has been growing interest in the study of simultaneous interpreting with text(SI with text). The majority of current research has been focused on comparing SI with and without text only in one direction, mostly on into-A interpreting. However, few studies compare the SI quality difference between into-A and into-B interpreting. In this thesis,an empirical study is conducted to compare the SI quality difference between SI with and without text in two directions:from Chinese(A)into English(B)and the reverse. There has been an increase in interaction between two or more disciplines, and plenty of research on interpreting has been carried out within cognitive psychology.Previous studies in this field suggest that SI with text involves a higher risk of interference compared with SI without text.Among all the existing theories, cognitive resource footprint and conflict matrix in simultaneous interpreting are introduced as the theoretical framework.Based on these theories, this dissertation attempts to conduct an empirical study to study the relationship between the presence of the text and SI quality in different language directions, and find out reasons for the effect of text on SI quality. After analyzing the experiment data, this dissertation reaches the conclusion that:in case of insufficient preparation time, the presence of the text still enhances SI quality in both directions;and differences lie in different quality aspects as well as in different interpreting directions. In the end,the thesis gives some suggestions to simultaneous interpreting practitioners and trainees.
