| This thesis is a report of the English-Chinese translation of Chapter Five and part of Chapter Nine from William Faulkner's A Fable,As the 1955 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner,the novel is listed as one of the major works in the writer's later career.As a master of language,he has employed in the book various techniques such as flashback,symbolism,Biblical and mythical narration.Other remarkable characteristics of the novel cover super-long and complicated sentences,abnormal usage of punctuation marks,complex wording,etc.It is all the above mentioned features that form the unique style of Faulkner.To reproduce such style is the top priority for the translator.Guided by Liu Miqing's theory of Stylistic Markers and Nida's theory of Functional Equivalence,the thesis analyzes how the objective is achieved.The thesis is divided into five parts.In Chapter One,the author and the text to be translated are briefly introduced.It also gives a review on Faulkner studies,especially the translation of the writer's works and relevant studies in China,and outlines the significance of this thesis.Chapter Two presents the translation task and the translator's Chinese version on which the arguments of the thesis are based.Chapter Three builds the theoretical foundation for the thesis by introducing Liu's and Nida's theory,the former as a translation methodology while the latter as the standard for judgment.Chapter Four is the central part of the thesis where examples classified into Form and Non-Form Markers and then subdivided into Phonological,Register and Lexical,Syntactic and Textual Markers,Markers of Figures of Speech,Manners of Expression,Inner Qualities and Visual Fusion of Receptors are enumerated to explain and analyze how the translator has managed to reproduce Faulkner's unique literary style and produce a functionally equivalent translation.The thesis is ended by conclusion,where lessons drawn from the project are summarized. |
