University stage has a far-reaching influence on life. However, with the increasing pressure of study and employment, more and more college students have begun to develop various forms of mental health problems, which will seriously hinder the development of college students.Psychology has a long-standing concern for the mental health of college students.Related research reveals that various life events faced by college students in their daily lives are one of the important reasons that affect the psychological health of college students. As a kind of stressor, life events can not only directly affect mental health, but also indirectly affect the individual's mental health through other variables. And previous studies have shown that sleep quality, internet addiction may play an important role between these two factors. In order to explore more deeply and comprehensively the impact and the corresponding mechanisms of life events on the mental health of college students, and to examine the potential mediation among them, this study introduced mediating variables such as sleep quality and internet addiction while examining the influence of life events on mental health, and constructed a serial mediating model about these four variables. On the other hand,in order to explore possible boundary conditions and individual differences, this study also examined the modulating effect of orientations to happiness on the relationship between sleep quality and internet addiction. This study used the General Health Questionnaire,Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Checklist,Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index,Chinese Internet Addiction Scale(revision)and Orientations to Happiness Scale to conduct questionnaire surveys.A total of 537 undergraduates and postgraduates from different schools and majors were selected as subjects, then SPSS and AMOS software were used to analyze the data. The results are as follows:(1)In terms of mental health, the degree of depression of male students is significantly higher than that of female students. In terms of life events, the degree of influence of interpersonal relationship among sophomore and junior students is significantly higher than that of the second and third graduate student. In terms of sleep quality, male students used sleep medicine more than female students;freshman students had significantly more daytime dysfunction than sophomores, juniors, and seniors.Compared with male students, female students have more compulsive use of internet and withdrawal symptoms of internet addiction, and more tolerance symptoms of internet addiction.Female college students have a significantly higher hedonic orientation than male students;college students from cities have significantly higher hedonic orientation than college students from rural areas.(2)The results of correlation analysis show that there are significant positive correlations between the four variables of life events, mental health, sleep quality and internet addiction.(3)Structural equation modeling and subsequent mediation analysis show that life events can not directly predict mental health.Life events positively predict the quality of sleep, sleep quality positively predict mental health, sleep quality plays a complete intermediary role between life events and mental health.Life events positively predict internet addiction, internet addiction positively predicts mental health, internet addiction plays a complete intermediary role between life events and mental health.Sleep quality positively predicts internet addiction, sleep quality and internet addiction play a chain intermediary role between life events and mental health.(4)The modulating effect of eudaimonic orientation on the relationship between sleep quality and internet addiction is not significant, while hedonic orientation can positively moderate the effects of sleep quality to internet addiction. The results of this study show that life events can indirectly impair the mental health of college students by reducing the quality of sleep and increasing internet addiction. At the same time, compared with college students who have a low hedonic orientation, college students with high hedonic orientation tend to be more likely to develop into internet addiction under the influence of poor sleep, and finally impair the mental health. Therefore,in order to maintain physical and mental health in the face of the pressures and challenges of life, college students should pay attention to adjusting their sleep, learn to control their online behavior, and avoid being addicted to the short pleasure brought by the internet.
