A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Summer(Chapters 1-4)under The Guidance Of Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation Theory

The novel Summer(1917)is written by Edith Wharton,which tells about the growth of a young girl Charity,the awakening of feminine consciousness and the resistance against patriarchal society.Feminism is still a hot topic nowadays,so this feminist novel still has great inspiration for contemporary people.There has been no translated version of this novel in China.So the translation of this novel is not only helpful for the contemporary Chinese readers to understand the style of Edith Wharton's works,but also for the translator to improve her translation skills and raise her cultural awareness.Peter Newmark's translation theory is used in this practice.According to him,translation strategy includes semantic translation and communicative translation.Based on the different functions,Newmark put forward three kinds of texts:expressive texts,informative texts and vocative texts,and advocated different translation strategies to translate different texts.According to Newmark's classification of text functions,Sunmmer belongs to the serious literature,and is the expressive text,so it is more suitable to choose the theory of semantic translation as the theoretical guidance of this translation practice.The author classifies Summer as a female Gothic novel.From three aspects of vocabulary,sentence and rhetoric,the author analyzes how to use the strategy of semantic translation to deal with the source text.In this report,the author explores how to apply translation strategies to Gothic themes and how they are effectively used to reproduce the effect of the source text in the process of translation.The author selects representative cases from the translation practice to analyze.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the original text and the significance of the topic,and briefly introduces the theoretical basis and the structure of the report.The second chapter introduces the difficulties of translating the source text and some preparation before translation.The third chapter introduces the theoretical basis of this report,the key concepts of Newmark's translation theory.The strategy of semantic translation is adopted in this practice.The fourth chapter is the case analysis.The author analyzes some specific examples in the translation of the novel Summer,and starts from the perspective of female Gothic novels,to expound the guiding role of Newmark's theory.The fifth chapter summarizes the limitations and gains in the translation.
