This paper strives for an in-depth interpretation of designers' creative practice by utilizing the concepts of identity and identity construction in sociology and anthropology. The important role that designers' creative ideas and motivations play in their creative practice will also be explored. The birth of a new design is closely related to the social and cultural environment and the designers themselves. This study seeks to discuss the identity consciousness and design consciousness a designer should have during the global cultural transformation to effectively promote the healthy development of Chinese local design and national culture.Self-identity and identity construction are about the question of “who I am”.They determine “how I look at myself” and the way one chooses to live.Cultural changes in the process of globalization facilitate an unprecedented blend and mutual penetration of cultural forms of different countries and races. This profound change in cultural form,at the same time, causes people in different ethnic cultures to become more and more vague about themselves, and hence increases identity anxiety, which leads to constant conflicts between different cultural forms that want to have a voice, and this is the status quo of global cultural transformation.Things are dominant representatives of culture and the design behavior,as an act of creating things,is also closely related to the development of culture.During the global cultural transition,in different ways and from different perspectives,a group of contemporary designers with cultural consciousness and identity consciousness have treated current cultural transition in an innovative and reconstructive way. They think in-depth about the development path of their design work and provide their own answers. We can see from these designers their efforts to explore art and design, and their responses to the change in the world. This article extends from cultural consciousness to personal identity consciousness, aimed at discussing the important influence of identity consciousness on designer's creative practice in the cultural transition under the anti-globalization trend of thought. In addition, this study seeks to classify and compare the creative practice of contemporary designers from the aspects of designer's identity and identity construction. In the study of designer's identity, the following five aspects are explored: the designer's cultural identity;the designer's social identity;the designer's regional identity;the designer's professional identity;and the designer's hybrid identity. For designer's identity construction, the discussion is focused on the following four aspects: that identity construction is initiative and unfinished;the relationship between identity construction and social development;that identity construction has a complete language system;openness and pluralism of identity construction. And it discusses the process of designer's identity construction from two aspects of context and language. The research on the creation and practice of contemporary designers must be placed in the background of globalization and discussed in-depth from the perspective of sociology and anthropology. The practice of Chinese designers must be carried out under the concept of cultural consciousness with an emphasis on the importance of designers' self-identity consciousness in the cultural transformation,so that the Chinese designers can adapt to the new era and the new international environment and be capable of independent culture selection and innovation. They have to consciously rely on the local and national cultural traditions, make full use of local resources, and absorb excellent ingredients of foreign cultures to promote the independent innovation of Chinese local and national culture.
