English reading is one of the most important parts of senior high school English teaching.For most students in China,they almost have no chance to communicate with the native English speakers.Thus,English reading is the most important way to increase their language input and improve their English abilities.However,the situations of English reading teaching in senior high school are not optimistic,most of English reading teaching courses are still influenced by the traditional teaching method which pays more attention to the explanation of new words,phrases,grammar points and the translation of the reading text.Most students hold a negative attitude toward this kind of passive learning approach.Their reading abilities are worse as well.Communicative Language Teaching(CLT)is a popular foreign language teaching method which aims to cultivate student's communicative competence.Applying CLT method to English reading teaching in senior high school not only enables students to improve their reading abilities,but also meets the requirements of New Curriculum Standard.This research discusses the application of CLT to the actual English reading teaching class in detail which is based on the published literature studies and combined with the researcher's own teaching experiences.The aim is to research whether CLT can improve the present English reading situations in senior high school.There are two research questions to be discussed in this paper:1.Can CLT arouse senior high school student's interest in English reading?2.Can CLT enhance senior high school student's proficiency of English reading?This research is carried out in No.35 Senior High School of Shenyang,and the contrastive experiment lasted for four months.The participants involved in the experiment are64 students from two parallel classes(Class 9 and Class 10)of Grade Two.Class 9 is regarded as the control class(CC)which have 30 students and Class 10 is taken as the experimental class(EC)which have 34 students.Both CC and EC are taught by the same teacher but with different teaching methods.In EC the teacher applied CLT to teach reading,while students in CC were still taught by the traditional teaching method.In order to make sure the practicality and persuasion of the experiment,the research employed some experiment instruments which include questionnaires,tests and interview,and the data collected from the experiment are analyzed by the SPSS software.According to the data analyses,the senior high school student's interest of learning English reading are aroused by using CLT in English reading teaching,and their readingproficiency are also enhanced by using this teaching method.Therefore,applying CLT in English reading teaching is essential and has active influence on reading learning.The researcher hopes this study could give some help and references to the aspects of English reading teaching in senior high school.
