A Report On The Translation Of Handbook For Coring Technology(Chapter Ⅺ And Ⅻ)

This report is based on the C-E translation of Chapter Ⅺ and Ⅻ of A Handbook for Coring Technology,which is under the category of scientific and technological text and mainly introduces the application of four kinds of coring technologies and the provision of operation safety.As an important branch of English for Science and Technology(EST),English in the production field is characterized by objectivity,logic and specialty.Meanwhile,it is a handbook that help instruct readers on how to operate and maintain the equipment.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Typology theory,the author has written the report summarizing strategies of translating this kind of materials by integrating her experience so as to reproduce EST texts featuring strictness,objectivity and simplicity and accuracy fully taking the difference in grammar,sentence structure and expression habit between English and Chinese.Only by this can the target readers accept and understand the target text in content and language.This report comprises of four parts:Chapter One is an introduction to translation project,including the background information of the project,text type and the value of target text;Chapter two is the translation process,including the translation preparation,translation process and quality control;Chapter three is case analysis,which introduces the C-E translation strategy and skill of coring handbook in lexical level,sentence level and chart level;the last chapter is the conclusion.This report shows that the translation of coring operation handbook should not only take into consideration the strictness and objectivity features of EST,but also achieve the core goal of handbook translation,that is,to ensure the target readers can receive the same information and response as the source reader do,namely making sure the target reader can operate relevant equipment following the instruction of the the handbook.Translation study on a handbook for coring technology guided by Text Typology is of vital importance both in academic research and economic exchanges with foreign country in its practical application.
