A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Process Technology Scheme From The Perspective Of Text Typology

In recent years,the world's petroleum and chemical industry has undergone profound changes,and revolutionary innovations have emerged constantly.The emergence of new technologies,energy sources and markets has brought tremendous impact on the development of the traditional chemical industry.In the context of China's “Belt and Road” initiative,the international cooperation seeks to promote the future of sustainable development through the exchanges and dialogues between many countries in the global petroleum and chemical industry.The translation project Chemical Technology Scheme(hereinafter referred to as “Scheme”)is in the context of international cooperation and exchange of chemical industry,for our domestic companies to participate in international cooperation,and also facilitate foreign companies to learn from China's experience in technological development.The “Scheme” is intended to serve as a Chinese company's technical guide for its foreign partners.It consists of four parts,totaling up to 45,952 Chinese characters: process description of MDI raw materials,process description of TDI raw materials,gas preparation method and investment estimation.The report extracts part of the translation of the “Scheme”,employing two sets of functional translation theories: Reiss' s “Text Typology” and Nord's “Translation-Oriented Text Analysis”.The former is mainly used to determine the text type,select the translation strategy;while the latter is employed for source text(hereinafter referred to as “ST”)analysis from the intratextual level to extratextual levels,and for helping solve the difficulties and problems in translation practice.The report first introduces the project background,the preparation of translation,the ST analysis and translation theory,and determines the text type of this translation,namely: informational text based on conveying objective facts and information.The main characteristics of the ST are analyzed from two aspects: intratextual and extratextual factors.Secondly,it expounds the difficulties or problems of translation.For example,using a large number of professional terms and common vocabulary in the professional field,and the vocabulary is characterized by normalization and objectiveness.At the syntactic level,the ST contains many Chinese sentences without subjects,and impersonal sentences in the active voice.Besides,long and complex sentences are often used.Through the ST analysis and the guidance of functional translation theory,corresponding translation strategies and methods are adopted to achieve the translation purpose,and a detailed case study and discussion are also conducted.In the fifth part,it is concluded that the chemical technology texts have typical language and stylistic characteristics as an informative text type,namely,objectively concise the language and rigorous style.In view of these features of such texts,the report employs part of speech conversion,voice conversion,sentence splitting and combination,and addition of cohesive devices to ensure the accurate transmission of information.
