In consider of the re-establishment of its ruling order and the regional balance, the Tang court gave its generals the permit to have autonomous military commands in most of the imperial domain after the An-Shi Rebellion.Different from those in Hebei,Guanzhong and Henan, the military commands in East Shannan Circuit have a unique origin.East Shannan Circuit lays between Guanzhong,Henan,Jianghuai and Bashu. The convenience of transportation and its financial character make it vital to the Tang Empire. The Rebellion urges Emperor Suzong to seize the control all over the realm from his father and later the conflict between the two emperors turns into the battle for East Shannan Circuit. As Emperor Xuanzong failed, autonomous military commands were set up by the son. This gave birth to the four-province system of East Shannan Circuit.Because of the pacification of former rebel warlords, the four provinces combined into two. However, the great rebellion in the time of Emperor Dezong disturbed the still since the end of An-Shi Rebellion. The Tang court had to rebuild the four-province system to help suppressing the rebels. This system was kept by the later emperors till the end of Tang Dynasty. The thesis finds out that these provincial military commands originated from the conflict between Emperor Xuanzong and Emperor Suzong, and they played a subordinate role during the empire's anti-rebel wars.
