Research On English-Chinese Translation Of Prose From The Perspective Of Horizon Of Expectation

Prose is regarded as aesthetic article for its beautiful language,authentic feelings and free composition.Prose translation is an important part of literary translation.The key for prose translation is to reproduce the beauty of prose with the prerequisite of remaining faithful to the source text.Reception Aesthetics is the literary criticism theory put forward by Jauss and Iser,scholars of German Constants School in the 1960 s.The traditional literary researches center on either writers or works.Jauss and Iser hold the view from a new perspective that literary research should center on readers.Horizon of Expectation is the core concept of the theory.It emphasizes that the literary works can be accepted and realize their values only when they fuse into readers' horizon of expectation.A lot of Chinese scholars have studied the translation of different kinds of texts based on the theory of Horizon of Expectation.Relatively,the theory is less applied in the research on English-Chinese prose translation.Therefore,the author takes Horizon of Expectation as the theoretical foundation and selects some excellent English Prose and their corresponding Chinese versions from the book Anthology of Chinese and English Prose.With the focus on target readers' expectation of language,culture,and artistic conception,the author will discusses how to satisfy the three dimensional expectations of target readers in a way of case study.Some enlightenment for English-Chinese prose translation can be concluded from the research.When the translator is occupied with translation,he is supposed to from time to time pay attention to the fusion between the text and target readers' horizon of expectation and reproduce the beauty of prose.A piece of well-translated prose is sure to realize its aesthetic values.The thesis is expected to serve as a reference for future researches on English-Chinese prose translation.
