After more than 60 years of French colonial rule, the Lao Hmongs who originated from China, not only became synonymous of opium producers, but also gradually got involved in the Cold War whirlpool because of the division of clan under its ruling. With the continuing escalation of the Vietnam War,and in order to contain the extension of the North Vietnamese forces and attack the "Ho Chi Minh Trail" in Laos, the CIA began secretly recruiting Hmongs soldiers who were good at fighting in the mountains since 1960.And gradually build the armed force into a political and military tool of the United States in Laos.In view of the family hatred and the needs of their respective interests, the two major Hmong clans, which were in opposition to each other, were on the side of the United States with Pathet Lao and the North Vietnamese respectively, which futher deepened the divide between the clans.Over the next decade or so,the United States relied on the Wang Pao's Hmongs of anti-communist military forces, which it strongly supported,to play a vtal role in competing with Pathet Lao and North Vietnam in Laos. This has greatly nurtured the hatred of Pathet Lao and the North Vietnamese against the anti-Communist Hmongs people.Since the United States'policy towards Laos was always subordinate to its policy towards Vietnam during the Cold War,especially after the singing of the armistice agreement between the United States and Vietnam in 1973,the Lao Hmongs army was gradually abandoned by the United States. It laid the the groundwork for future waves of refugees from Hmongs. After the Vietnam War ended in 1975,the Lao People's Revolutionary Party was eager to clean the Hmongs. In addition to adopting a radical policy of ethnic integration, the Lao Government has also carried out new biological and chemical weapons attacks on the Hmongs in deep forests of high mountains, forcing them to flee the high mountains. As a result of the the strong political hatred of the Kaysone regime,a large number of Hmongs with their families crossed the the Mekong River and fled to Thailand, thus forming a flood of Hmongs refugees, which became an important part of the influx of the Indosinian refugees. However, the Thai authority has a deep racial prejudice against the Hmongs, which makes the living conditions of the Hmongs refugees in the Indochina Refugee camps extremely unsatisfactory. Finally, the Western society, represented by the United States, began to help the Hmongs refugees on the basis of humanitarian and political interests, and the Hmongs were thus able to flow to many countries around the world. However, the Hmongs who first entered the western society experienced a process of tribulation and rebirth. All these things make the Lao Hmongs become the most unique and attractive group in the modern history of the Miao nationality.
