Whether English grammar should be taught in elementary school has always been a controversial topic.However,through a long-term practice,the English curriculum standard of full-time compulsory was issued in 2011,which stated all grammar that elementary school students should master.Since then,all teachers and experts began to realize the importance of grammar teaching in elementary school.However,the present situation of grammar teaching is not optimistic in elementary English class.On the one hand,some teachers who are influenced by traditional grammar teaching concept emphasize too much on grammar teaching in English class;especially in higher grades,it's common for teachers to instill grammar knowledge to students for good grades.On the other hand,due to the implementation of new curriculum reform,some teachers emphasize too much on cultivation of student's language communication ability;in their mind,students can learn second language naturally as long as there is enough and actual communication language environment,so these teachers seldom teach grammar in English class.In both extreme cases,students' English learning will be affected,which also makes the author carry out a survey of English grammar teaching in elementary to find the problems in elementary grammar teaching and put forward relevant strategies.Through the questionnaire and interview of some teachers and students in Changsha and the author's observation in internship process,this study finds a series of problems in English grammar teaching at present elementary school:teacher's insufficient understanding of grammar teaching,improper grammar teaching methods,monotonous grammar teaching evaluation,lack of integration of grammar teaching content.However,if these problems are not solved,students will also face some learning problems,namely their poor grammar awareness,weak communication skills and low interest in English learning.Combined with the findings,this study analyzes the causes of the issues in grammar teaching:lack of complete guidance in English grammar teaching of elementary schools,the deviation of teachers' understanding to English textbooks,the outdated teaching concept of teachers,the improper attribution of teachers,and the stress of "entrance of middle school" in senior stage.Finally,based on the actual problems of grammar teaching in elementary school,this paper proposes strategies to optimize English grammar teaching in elementary schools:having a correct understanding of English grammar teaching,exploring the effective way of grammar teaching,enriching grammar evaluation teaching system,integrating English grammar teaching content,strengthening the guidance of students' grammar learning strategies.In conclusion,this study hopes that the proposed strategies can inspire the English teachers in elementary schools to teach grammar better,thus to help students master the grammar rules,and improve their communicative competence finally.
