As a famous scholar in the late Ming Dynasty,Huang Daozhou had made great achievements in such aspects as Confucianism,sciences,poetry and calligraphy.He was famed for Cursive Script and Xiaokai(regular script in small characters).His Xiaokai,originated from Wei-Jin Dynasty,was simple but vigorous and changed the traditional well-balanced posture.The thesis covers four parts.As the introduction,the first part elaborates the significance of the selected topic and the current research about Huang Daozhou at home and abroad.According to the review,there are many researches on Huang Daozhou’s calligraphic style while the researches on the causes of his artistic style of Xiaokai are not deep-going or specific.This is the focus of the thesis.The second part gives a brief account of Huang Daozhou’s life from his family background and birth,his experiences in the imperial examination as well as his political career.The third part divides Huang Daozhou’s Xiaokai into several phases and analyzes his artistic style from the aspects of pen-wielding,structure and writing rules.The fourth part systematically explores the contributing factors to the artistic style of Huang Daozhou’s XiaoKai from the political,economic and cultural environment of the late Ming Dynasty,the change of his aesthetic idea and the writing standards he obeyed in his calligraphy.Based on the research,the contributing factors to the artistic style of Huang Daozhou’s Xiaokai lie in: 1)As a representative calligrapher in the late Ming Dynasty,Huang Daozhou was distinctive in the style of his Xiaokai and meanwhile shared many similarities with the calligraphers of the same period,which was deeply influenced by the fashion of the late Ming Dynasty.2)Huang Daozhou advocated the tradition,followed the example of the Wei and Jin Dynasties and penetrated into the ancient calligraphic law in his learning.Therefore,he became the most innovative calligrapher in the late Ming Dynasty and injected new vitality into Calligraphy circles of Late Ming.This also proved that "the new emerging out of the old" was the subject of the development of calligraphy.3)As a famous scholar in the late Ming Dynasty,Huang Daozhou paid great attention to the accomplishment of learning,and his calligraphy showed its classic elegance and unrestrained style,which fully confirmed the law of the development of calligraphy: the Dao deducing techniques and techniques coming into the Dao.
