With its strong practicality in actual writing and great spiritual meaning, cursive script occupies a very important position in the history of Chinese calligraphy, and even more so in the exhibition halls today. However, from Zhi Zhang,Xianzhi Wang,Xu Zhang,Su Huai,Tingjian Huang,Yunming Zhu to Wei xu,the wild cursive calligraphy in the late Ming Dynasty had reached a height that very few cursive script calligrapher afterwards could achieve. The new exploration of contemporary cursive calligraphy did not occur until the creation of “chaotic calligraphy” by Dongling Wang in the modern times. Here in this article,we intend to perform an in-depth interpretation of the evolution from Wei Xu's wild cursive calligraphy to Dongling Wang's “chaotic calligraphy” before exploring the origin together with the philosophical and aesthetical significance of "chaotic calligraphy".Furthermore, the breakthrough of Dongling Wang's “chaotic calligraphy” in three aspects(concept, technology, graphics)will be revealed.Dongling Wang's "chaotic calligraphy" has managed to build a bridge between different times and cultures, inheriting the traditions of calligraphy and expressing a strong sense of the contemporary age at the same time.It has attracted extensive attention in the worldwide artistic community, and will inevitably arouse in-depth study and analysis in the field of contemporary calligraphy studies. The art world will be inspired to continuingly explore and reflect the inheritance and innovation of contemporary calligraphy. The realization that calligraphy always evolves with time and that innovation is the ultimate drive of development in arts will be more widely acknowledged.
