Research On The Use Of The Conjunctions In Senior High School English Writing

In language learning,English learners should pay attention not only to listening and speaking,but also to reading and writing.The length of compositions in senior high school is short.If the transition between sentences and paragraphs is unnatural,the cohesion and coherence of the texts will be affected.As an important means of cohesion and coherence,conjunction plays an important role in the quality of the text.In English writing,whether the conjunctions can be used properly and whether a coherent text can be produced is one of important tasks of English teaching and learning.By referring to previous related studies,the author found that most of the research on conjunctions is mainly focused on university students,and there are not many researches on senior high school students.Based on the theory of Discourse Analysis and Error Analysis,this study investigates and analyzes the current situation of the use of conjunctions in high school students' writing.This study mainly discusses three questions:1)What is the overall situation of the use of conjunctions in senior high school students' English compositions?2)What are the problems of conjunctions in senior high school students' English writing?3)What is the relationship between the number of English conjunctions used by high school students and their writing achievement?In this study,145 effective questionnaires were collected and 142 English composition samples were collected from Huaibei Experimental High School.Through data comparison,analysis and discussion,the results show that1)Senior high school students use more kinds of connectives in English writing,and tend to use additive conjunctions,temporal conjunctions,transitional conjunctions,reason and result conjunctions and so on.However,the use of conjunctions is insufficient.2)Senior high school students overuse a few relatively simple high-frequency conjunctions in writings,but avoid using or underuse other conjunctions,even misusesome conjunctions.3)There is a positive correlation between the number of conjunctions used by senior high school students and their composition achievement.The more the number of conjunctions in the composition is,the higher their scores are.The results of the study prove that although high school students can use certain conjunctions in their English writing,they avoid using or using less or misusing some other conjunctions.For this reason,the author puts forward some suggestions on how to effectively instruct students to write and improve their writing ability.Such as enhancing the awareness of discourse,training students' sensitivity to cohesion and coherence,emphasizing differences in different styles,reading extensively,and strengthening training in the use of conjunctions.At the same time,there are also some shortcomings in this study,such as increasing the number of subjects and samples.
