A Practice Report On The Escort Interpreting Of An African Scholar's Visit To Baicheng Academy Of Agricultural Sciences

This report is based on the interpreting task the author performed when she acted as an escort interpreter during a Cameroonian scholar's visit at several institutes of Baicheng Academy of Agricultural Sciences.The author selects the record of this escort interpreting practice as the interpreting materials.By analyzing the escort interpreting process,the author discusses the problems and puts forth the feasible coping strategies and solutions.This report makes detailed analysis of the interpreting process.First,the author introduces task background,task features and task requirements.Then the author reviews the pre-task preparations,interpreting performance as well as the client's and the author's assessments of the interpretation quality.On this basis,the author summarizes several problems she has encountered during the interpreting process,such as information loss,misinterpreting and incoherence.In response to these problems,the author puts forth the coping strategies.The strategies for information loss are improving English listening skills and memorizing ability.The strategies for mis-interpreting of figures are application of marking methods and reasonable vague numeral.The strategies for misinterpreting of Chinese subjectless sentences are addition of subjects and application of English special sentence patterns.The strategies for lacking of fluency and coherence are improving language expression skills and application of logical connectives.It is hoped that this thesis can be used as a reference for other interpreters to conduct interpreting practice on similar materials.
