A Practice Report On The E-C Escort Interpreting Of "One-Day Tour In Hershey"

This practice report is a reflection on an escort interpreting when the author participated in an international exchange program during the 2017 summer vacation in the United States.The task of the escort interpreting is the English commentary on tourist attractions — the Hershey.The reason why the author chooses this material to analyze and reflect on the merits and demerits in the interpretation is that this type of interpreting features strong practicability,high frequency of use and modest degree of difficulty for MTI trainees.This report mainly focuses on the following aspects.The first part describes in detail the description of the interpreting task,including the background and the requirement of the practice.In the following part,the author introduces the process of interpreting,including task preparation,task implementation and task evaluation.Finally,the author analyzes the major problems found in the practice,including misinterpretation,loss of information,redundancy and logical confusion.Accordingly,countermeasures are concluded,such as going to intended work sites to get familiar with the accent and fast delivery speed of the orators,or collecting more information in advance;summarizing pronunciation rules;properly allocating attention and memory effort.Besides that,interpreter can also adopt supplementary interpretation and omission methods in some cases.Not only can we intuitively test the basic ability of escort interpreting from practice,but also find solutions to make up for deficiencies and improve interpreting performance through retrospection,analysis and reflection to strengthen the MTI trainees' ability in escort interpreting.The author hopes this report can throw light for those who are interested in the escort interpreting of tourist attractions.
