English teaching is not an unfamiliar topic in China,especially with the increasing interactions between China and foreign countries,a growing need for qualified English educators can be seen.However,very often there is a big gap between the language used in real life and the language taught in traditional classrooms.Among various teaching methods for improving English teaching and learning,immersion is one that has been advocated by teachers and professors.Documented studies have implied that immersion programs could remarkably improve participants' level of foreign language proficiency,as well as the academic content achievement.Recent studies are focusing on the content and language achieved by students in the programs,but researches on teachers who push immersion programs work in instruction and how they integrate content and language in instruction are hardly available.This study,based on the theories of SLA(Second Language Acquisition),ZPD(The Zone of Proximal Development)and CBI(Content Based Instruction),aims to investigate primary school English immersion program through the perspective of teachers on their real process and performance with integrating content and language.Following the activities of CLAPE(Center for Language Acquisition and Precision Education),this study is mainly focused on the real English immersion classes,which could directly reveal the way teachers integrate content land language to achieve the dual goals of immersion programs.Teachers,lesson plans are collected for the evaluation of whether teachers are aware of dual teaching objectives in the lesson planning stage.In addition,questionnaire,classroom observation and interview are adapted in this study.Questions answered in this study are shown as below:1.How do English immersion teachers integrate content and language in their lesson plans?2.How do they integrate content and English in their instruction?3.What are their ideas on integrating content and language?Results indicate that English immersion teachers in primary school are making great efforts to achieve both content objectives and language objectives in their instruction.Both language targeted instruction and content targeted instruction observed from the classroom observation indicate that English teachers are working hard,but there are still some aspects to work on to improve the integration in English immersion programs.Besides,Existing problems are pointed out that mistakes and errors are very often been missed in immersion classes,and language presented shows no variety.And this study highlights the importance and urgency of providing supports for immersion teachers.
