A Study On Howard Goldblatt's Translation Style

As a notable translator of contemporary Chinese literature,Howard Goldblatt enjoys a high reputation in the translation field and has been a hot topic to study in the academia.There are already a certain number of researches done in this field,but less emphasis is made on Howard Goldblatt's translation style in Mo Yan's autobiographic novel Bian,which should be given more attention to its uniqueness in theme and narration.In this thesis,based on Mona Baker's definition of translation style,a combination of both qualitative and quantitative analyses are made to examine Howard Goldblatt's translation style demonstrated in Change.Apart from the analysis of the translator's choice of the source text as well as open intervention in the paratext,a close reading between the source text and the target text is made to exemplify the translation strategies used in the translation,ranging from the word level to the sentence level,and from the discourse level to the cultural level.Moreover,a corpus-based research on the language style of Change is examined from micro to macro levels,including features like lexical distribution,high frequency word lists,sentence length,readability and so on.Behind the translation style,factors influencing the formulation of translation style are also discussed in this thesis.Serving as exemplification and examination of the previous studies relating to Howard Goldblatt's translation style,however,there are always more that can be done in the future for a deeper understanding of translation style by employing more suitable methodologies for investigation.
