Intertextuality is one of the most important concepts in the transformation from Structuralism to Post-Structuralism.In 1960 s,Julia Kristeva first put forward the concept of “Intertextuality”.Since then,many scholars,such as Roland Barthes,Jacques Derrida,Laurent Jenny,Luo Xuanming,and Huang Nianran.,have also touched upon and developed the theory of intertextuality from different perspectives.Any text contains the existence of other texts.Only after the cross-reference to its pre-texts,can the meaning of a text be rationally generated and comprehended.Therefore,a large amount of relevant knowledge is required for the precise comprehension of the text.Translation is viable to be seen as a type of transferring activity with intertextual features.Due to its language conciseness,rich connotation and accumulation of culture and history,the translation of Chinese science classics,to some extent,differs from that of the modern scientific texts.There exist complicated intetextual relations in and between the texts of different Chinese science classics.Meanwhile,intertextuality is never restricted to the relations among different texts.Other facts,such as history,society and the cultural environment,can also be part of intertextuality.In other words,the translation of Chinese science classics is a kind of intertextual activity which can break the restrains of time,space and cultures.Besides,the differences between the source language readers and the target language readers lie not only in the languages they use,but also in their cultural background,experience and knowledge,which would bring obstacles to the target readers' understanding.The theory of Intertextuality offers significant theoretical foundation to meet the challenge.Based on the theory of Intertextuality,this thesis undertakes a study on the intertextual relationship in Chinese science classics and corresponding translation strategies.A case study is conducted upon the representative science classic,Brush Talks from Dream Brook,in order to reveal the intertextual relations among different texts.For detailed analysis of the translation obstacles brought by intertextuality,the thesis divides these obstacles into two kinds,namely,the manifest intertextual obstacles and the constitutive intertextual obstacles.And then,the thesis focuses on the translated version of Brush Talks from Dream Brook by Professor Wang Hong,and tries to figure out the translation strategies and methods that can help deal with the intertextual obstacles.It is found that methods,including literal translation,paraphrasing,and amplification,can help transfer the content of the original text.Moreover,in order to improve the quality of the translated text,methods,such as annotation,explicitation of the theme,restructuring,and reproduction of the beauty of language,can be adopted during the translating process.This thesis aims to reveal the complicate interplay of intertextual relations between science classics and other texts,and their influences on the translation methods and process.It is hoped that the research can contribute to the current situation of the study of Chinese science classics translation.
