Critical thinking is a hot issue at home and abroad.It is conducive to cultivate students' abilities of independent thinking and independent judgement and it is also a premise for creative thinking.In The Critical Thinking Toolkit,the authors used the latest research findings in the field of critical thinking to equip readers with the essential knowledge and methods for clear,analytical,logical thinking and critique in a range of scholarly contexts and everyday situations.Therefore,the translator selected this book to translate into Chinese and the translation will be beneficial to the improvement of thinking modes and critical thinking abilities of Chinese readers.The translation report is based on the translation practice of the ninth chapter of The Critical Thinking Toolkit.The report mainly includes five parts: introduction,task description,process description,case analysis and conclusion.Introduction part includes background,purpose and significance of the report.Task description includes task background,introduction to the source text and target readers.Process description talks about pre-translation,translation process and quality control.The core part of this translation report is case analysis and it discusses the main difficulties in the translation process at lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.First,to deal with proper nouns and technical terms,the translator used the methods of adopting the established translated names,transliteration,literal translation and free translation.Second,for long sentences,the translator applied the methods of following the original order,inverting the original order and splitting a long sentence into shorter parts or sentences;for passive sentences,the translator generally used the methods of converting the English passive into the Chinese active and converting the English passive into the Chinese passive.Third,in order to guarantee the quality of the cohesion of the target text,the translator laid emphasis on the translation of the personal pronouns and demonstrative pronouns.The translator has achieved great insight from this translation report.First,philosophical text has its own languages features,i.e.the features of strong objectivity and logicality.Second,excellent bilingual competence and rich knowledge reserve are helpful for the improvement of the translation quality of philosophical text.Third,the translation practice experience and translation methods are of reference significance for other philosophical text.
