A Study On The Dynamic Identity Construction Of The Hosts In TV Interview Based On The Adaptation Theory

Based on the research already done,it can be noticed that identity is closely related to the language people use.To put it another way,when communicating,people can employ language resources at their discretion to construct a certain identity with the hope to achieve pragmatic balance or to achieve the communicative goals set,and,on the contrary,a certain identity can also be used as a pragmatic resource to serve the speaker and it will be presented by the language.By reviewing the researches of identity done before,it is clear that,until now,most of the studies tend to be static,exploring the relationship between identity and language from a certain angle,and there lacks enough dynamic research on identity construction.Therefore,the author has collected interviews from The King Wang aired on HBS TV which features helping common families to solve their problems.And by taking the adaptation theory as the theoretical framework together with the speech acts theory and conversation analysis,the author has analyzed the identities constructed by the hosts and their distribution when the hosts help the guests solve the problems bothering them,how these identities are presented by language and their functions as well as mechanisms that drive the identity construction.According to the research results,it can be concluded that in the whole process of interviewing,the hosts have to be skilled in using language to construct three different identities under various situations so as to achieve the certainty of solving problems.And it is found that during the four stages of initiating the interview,identifying problems,solving problems and closing the interview,the distribution of each identity is different,while the contextual factors,including adapting to the mental,physical and social world,contribute to the dynamic construction of hosts,identities,and the interview can thus flow smoothly.On the one hand,this research can exert positive effects on enriching the study on identity construction and conversation analysis,and at the meantime,the applicability of the adaptation theory in pragmatics is further illustrated;on the other hand,the study on the dynamic identity construction of hosts has presented,in a direct and vivid way,how the hosts switch their identities to realize the pragmatic balance in the process of interviewing,which will be beneficial to the audience to make sure that they know what's what,and it will also shed light on people's daily conversation.
